Quick answer

What is IPL?

IPL (intense pulsed light) is a non-laser light treatment that emits a broad range of wavelengths through filters, so it can target brown pigment (melanin) and red blood vessels (haemoglobin) in the same session. It treats sun spots, freckles, diffuse redness, broken capillaries and dull, uneven tone. Spots usually darken and flake away within 1–2 weeks.

A series of 3–5 sessions about 3–4 weeks apart gives the most even result, and occasional maintenance helps keep tone clear. Filters and energy are chosen after a skin assessment.

What IPL treats

IPL suits mixed concerns where pigment and redness appear together.

01

Sun spots & freckles

Surface brown spots darken and shed.

02

Redness & flushing

Calms diffuse redness and visible vessels.

03

Dull, uneven tone

Brightens overall complexion.

04

Hands, neck & chest

Treats sun damage beyond the face.

A good fit if you…

  • have sun spots, freckles or photo-ageing
  • have redness or small broken capillaries
  • want a brighter tone with no downtime
  • have light to medium skin tone

Consider alternatives if you…

  • have melasma, which IPL can aggravate — laser toning is safer
  • have a fresh tan or darker skin type
  • are taking photosensitising medication
  • are pregnant

FAQ

IPL questions we hear most

Can’t find your answer? Message our English-speaking team on WhatsApp.

Is IPL a laser?

No. IPL uses broad-spectrum light rather than a single laser wavelength, which lets it treat both pigment and redness at once.

Does IPL hurt?

It feels like a warm snap with each flash. Cooling gel is used and most people need no numbing.

How many IPL sessions do I need?

Most people see clear change after 1–2 sessions and the best result after 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

Can IPL treat melasma?

IPL is not first-line for melasma because heat can trigger it. Low-energy laser toning is usually preferred; see melasma treatment.

Is IPL good for rosacea?

IPL can reduce persistent redness and visible vessels in rosacea, usually alongside medical skincare.
