Quick answer

What are lentigines and how are they removed?

Solar lentigines, often called age or liver spots, are flat, well-defined brown spots caused by cumulative sun exposure. They are removed with pigment lasers such as pico or Q-switched lasers, which shatter melanin in the spot; it darkens, forms a fine crust and flakes off within about 7–10 days. Many spots clear in 1–2 sessions.

A doctor first distinguishes lentigines from melasma, seborrhoeic keratoses or other lesions, because each needs a different approach. Daily sunscreen afterwards helps prevent new spots.

FAQ

Lentigines removal questions we hear most

Can’t find your answer? Message our English-speaking team on WhatsApp.

Are lentigines the same as freckles?

No. Freckles are small, genetic and fade in winter; lentigines are larger sun-induced spots that persist year-round. Both respond to pigment lasers — see freckle removal.

How many sessions do I need?

Many lentigines clear in 1–2 sessions spaced about 4–8 weeks apart; darker or larger spots may need more.

Will the spots come back?

A treated spot rarely returns in the same form, but new spots can appear with ongoing sun exposure, so daily SPF is important.

Can I wear makeup after?

Avoid rubbing the crusts for about a week; light makeup can be applied around them, and fully once they have shed.

What about age spots on the hands?

Hands respond well to the same lasers, though healing can take slightly longer. See also age spot treatment.
