How to Reduce Swelling After Facial Lifting Treatments

Swelling is one of the most common concerns after facial lifting treatments, especially for travellers with a flight, meetings or photos planned. The good news is that swelling after non-surgical lifting is usually mild and short-lived, and there is a lot you can do to help it settle faster.

This guide explains how much swelling to expect after each type of lifting treatment, practical steps to reduce it in the first days, what to avoid, how to plan around flights, and when swelling is a reason to contact the clinic.

1. Why swelling happens

Lifting treatments work by creating controlled heat or, in the case of threads, small entry points and repositioned tissue. The body responds with a normal inflammatory reaction: blood flow increases and fluid moves into the area to start repair. This is part of how new collagen is produced, so mild swelling is a sign that healing is underway.

2. How much swelling to expect

Ultherapy and Ulthera Prime: minimal; occasional mild swelling or tenderness along the jaw for a few days.

10THERMA: usually little more than redness for a few hours.

ONDA: mild swelling or tenderness for a few hours to a couple of days, especially under the chin.

Thread lift: the most noticeable, usually 24 to 48 hours of social downtime with tightness and possible small bruises.

Injections added on the same day: may add a day or two of swelling.

3. Cold compresses

For the first day, gentle cold compresses wrapped in a clean cloth can reduce swelling and discomfort. Apply for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. Never place ice directly on the skin, and avoid pressing hard, particularly after a thread lift where pressure can disturb the threads.

4. Sleep with your head raised

Sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated for the first two or three nights helps fluid drain away from the face. An extra pillow is usually enough. After a thread lift, avoid sleeping on your side so the threads are not pulled or compressed.

5. Reduce salt and alcohol

Salty foods and alcohol make the body retain fluid, which can make the face look puffier, especially in the morning. For a few days after treatment, choose lighter meals, drink plenty of water and limit alcohol. This is worth keeping in mind in Seoul, where many popular dishes are quite salty.

6. Avoid heat and intense exercise

Saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, hot yoga and intense workouts increase blood flow to the face and can prolong swelling. Most clinics recommend avoiding them for a few days after energy-based lifting, and for longer after a thread lift. Light walking is fine and can even help circulation.

7. Be gentle with your face

Avoid facial massage, heavy rubbing, gua sha and strong skincare for several days. After a thread lift, avoid opening your mouth very wide, chewing hard foods and dental treatments for about one to two weeks unless your doctor says otherwise.

8. Medications and supplements

Some supplements and medications increase bruising and swelling. Ask the clinic before your treatment whether anything you take should be paused, and never stop prescribed medication without speaking to your own doctor. After treatment, ask which pain relief is suitable if you need it.

9. Plan around flights

Cabin pressure and dry air can make mild swelling feel more noticeable. If you are flying soon after treatment, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the plane, keep your head supported and walk around when possible. Most patients can fly the next day after energy-based lifting; after a thread lift, it is best to allow a day or two if your schedule permits.

10. When to contact the clinic

Contact the clinic if swelling increases after the first two days, is very uneven, comes with worsening pain, warmth, redness or fever, or if you notice anything unexpected such as a lump that grows. Our English-speaking team can arrange a check-up while you are in Seoul or advise you remotely if you have already returned home.

11. Scheduling treatments with swelling in mind

If you are combining several treatments, schedule those with more downtime, such as threads or injections, early in your stay. Energy-based treatments with minimal swelling can be done later in the trip.

Conclusion

Most swelling after facial lifting settles within a few days. Cold compresses, sleeping with your head raised, reducing salt and alcohol, avoiding heat and being gentle with your skin all help.
